The apostrophe does the opposite. In п'ять (five) and дев'ять (nine), it keeps the consonant hard and inserts a tiny break before the ya sound, so п'ять is a crisp pyat rather than a blurred pyaht. English speakers tend to smooth these over. Giving the soft sign its gentle glide and the apostrophe its clean break makes a real difference in how native your counting sounds.

Common mistakes learners make

English speakers repeat a handful of errors.

• Misreading Cyrillic look-alikes. The letter shaped like a Latin n is an ee-type sound, not an n.
• Ignoring the soft sign. It adds a y-glide, so десять is DEH-syat, not DEH-sat.
• Blurring the apostrophe. Keep a clean break in п'ять and дев'ять.
• Flat stress. Put the emphasis on the right syllable, for example oh-DIN for one.

How to make them stick

Counting past 10

Ukrainian teens attach the ending -надцять. Eleven is одинадцять, twelve is дванадцять, and the pattern continues to nineteen. Twenty is двадцять, and the tens build from a digit plus a form of ten.
